The short answer
Stretching can improve flexibility. It may also help someone stand in a different alignment, which can change how tall they look or how a poorly standardized wall measurement reads. Neither result demonstrates that the femur, tibia or other long bones became longer.
A growing teenager may become taller during the same months they follow a stretching routine. That timing alone does not show that stretching caused the skeletal growth. Normal linear growth is driven by biological activity at growth plates and is shaped by genetics, developmental timing, hormones, nutrition and health.
flexibility is range of motion; posture is alignment; longitudinal growth is new bone length produced through growth-plate biology.
Why standing straighter can look like extra height
A slouched pose and a standardized standing-height position are not equivalent. CDC instructions control the floor, wall, feet, shoulders, head position and headpiece because posture and technique affect the reading. If a person stands straighter after mobility work, the measurement may change without any new bone length.
This is also why before-and-after photos are weak evidence for an “increase height” program. Camera angle, footwear, hair, chin position, pelvic position and time of day can all change the appearance or measurement.
What hanging and traction can change
Small adult studies have found immediate, millimeter-scale changes in stature or spinal height after axial or lumbar traction. Imaging studies of gravitational traction have also observed changes in intervertebral spacing. These findings describe short-term spinal loading and unloading rather than new long-bone growth. The same distinction helps explain why morning and evening height can differ.
Hanging is therefore not a valid test of added adult-height potential. A reading taken immediately after unloading the spine should not be compared with a later, normally loaded reading as if the difference were permanent growth.
How real longitudinal growth happens
During childhood and adolescence, long bones grow through organized cell activity in the epiphyseal growth plates. Cartilage is produced, enlarged and replaced by bone. As growth-plate activity winds down and the plates close, longitudinal growth slows and stops.
Flexibility training can still be useful for mobility, sport and comfort. Its real benefits do not need an unsupported promise that each stretch adds centimeters to final height.
A better way to evaluate a height claim
- Ask whether the result is flexibility, posture, a temporary spinal measurement or new bone length.
- Check whether before-and-after measurements used the same time, footwear, wall, head position and technique.
- Look for a reliable series across a meaningful interval rather than an immediate post-exercise reading.
- Reject guaranteed centimeters, unexplained accuracy badges and testimonials presented as biological proof.
